How to Look Up Your New York Real Estate License

Worried that your New York state real estate license has expired? If you want to know your current status, it's simple to look up your license online.

The eAccessNY License Management System

The eAccessNY License Management System lets you keep track of your real estate license status. It is secure and password-protected.

You make an eAccessNY account when you start the process of getting your license. Real estate salespeople and brokers use eAccessNY for these functions:

  • To register for the New York state real estate exam.

  • To apply for real estate license applications, changes, and renewals.

  • To perform real estate transactions.

  • To do public license searches.

Public License Searches in New York

The eAccessNY system lets you look up any real estate salesperson or broker licensed in the state of New York. This function is available to everyone who goes to the Division of Licensing Services website. You don't need to have a real estate salesperson or broker account to make a search.

You can search using their name, their license number, or the company they represent.

Once you input the information, the eAccessNY system:

  • Supplies you with the real estate salesperson's name.

  • Tells you whether they are a salesperson or a real estate broker.

  • Gives you their license number.

  • Lists their license expiration date.

If you click on the hyperlinked name, it takes you to a more detailed field. This field gives you the real estate salesperson's professional address and the "related party name" (the company they represent).

The eAccessNY system lets you know whether the person you're dealing with has a current real estate license. It's also an easy way to check when your own license needs to be renewed.

New York Real Estate Licensing: The Basics

You need to be licensed by the Division of Licensing Services before you can sell, exchange, or rent a real state property in the state of New York. You also need an active real estate license to collect rents.

If you want to deal in commercial real estate sales, you must be a licensed real estate broker.

Here are the requirements for a New York State real estate salesperson license:

  • You are at least 18 years of age.

  • You complete a 75-hour salesperson course, which you can do online.

  • You are sponsored by a New York state real estate broker.

  • You pass the New York state real estate exam.

  • You apply for the license itself and pay the $55 fee.

The Status of Your Real Estate License

Once you get your New York real estate license, it is valid for two years. After that, it needs to be renewed, or it will expire.

Your license status can be active, inactive, or expired.

  • An active license is one that is current and up-to-date.

  • Your status is inactive if you have qualified for the license but choose not to engage in real estate sales.

  • A license expires when you fail to take the proper steps to renew it on time.

"There is no grace period once your license expires," said Simone Weissman, a Licensed New York State Real Estate Salesperson with Compass. "However, you do have two years from the expiration date to renew your license. After that, you'll need to take the written exam again and submit a new application."

You have to complete 22.5 hours of continuing education credits (CECs) to renew your license. At least three of those credit hours need to be in fair housing and discrimination. Another credit hour must be in the law of agency.

Looking up your New York real estate license is a great way to see how much time you have before it expires so you can get the appropriate amount of CECs.
