6 Steps to Getting a License in Illinois


1. Meet the basics

You’ll need to be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED to qualify.

2. Complete the required pre-licensing coursework

Complete 75 hours of pre-licensing education approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

3. Get fingerprinted and pass a background check

This step must be completed through an approved vendor to ensure the integrity and professionalism of the real estate industry in Illinois.


4. Apply for your exam with the IDFPR

Submit your application and required fees to the IDFPR. Once approved, you'll be cleared to schedule your broker exam.

5. Pass the Illinois broker exam

At the end of your coursework, you'll take the state licensing exam. Score high enough, and you're good to move on.
