If you’re looking into a real estate career in Pennsylvania, there are certain requirements. You must be at least 18 years old and have completed a high school degree (or the equivalent). Many people are often surprised to learn you do not need a college degree to get your Pennsylvania real estate license.

You still need a 75-hour pre-licensing course. Once you finish that, you must pass the state real estate licensing exam. If you already have a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in real estate, that can work for your education requirement. A law degree can suffice, too. These degrees may be considered in lieu of your 75-hour pre-licensing course. Then, you can just move on and take the licensing exam. And if you took pre-licensing courses in another state, the Pennsylvania Real Estate Commission (PREC) may consider them. That's not a guarantee though.

In addition to pre-licensing, you can count on taking continuing education throughout your career. The PREC states you need to take at least 14 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain your license.

Your pre-licensing education teaches you how to perform a comparative market analysis, list and offer a property for sale, negotiate real estate loans, collect rent on behalf of a broker, and more. With continuing education, you can take classes dedicated to a specific part of your real estate practice. That way, you can brush up on the specific skills you need to do your job better.

Pennsylvania Broker Education

If you want to become a broker, you'll need 240 hours of professional real estate education. A broker can perform all of the duties of a licensed salesperson but also oversee other brokers and real estate agents.

If you have a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in real estate or a law degree, you may also have your pre-license broker education waived. But there are other requirements to becoming a broker you should know about. The main one is that you’ll need to document at least three years of salesperson experience in the state. PREC will also consider other comparable experiences. It reviews and makes decisions on a case-by-case basis.
