Illinois Real Estate Broker CE Requirements Explained

Illinois real estate broker CE requirements are tied to your original license date, not a one-size-fits-all rule. The April 30, 2026 renewal deadline has passed, but understanding what was required — and what the next cycle looks like — is useful whether you're making sure your records are in order or planning ahead for 2028.

Here's how the requirements break down based on when you were licensed.

CE Requirements by License Date

Licensed Before November 1, 2023

For the 2026 renewal cycle, brokers in this group were required to complete 12 hours of CE, including:

  • A 6-hour Core Course (including 2 hours of Fair Housing)
  • 6 hours of electives, including Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

The next renewal deadline for this group is April 30, 2028. The IDFPR has not yet published the full CE requirements for that cycle, but the structure is expected to follow a similar pattern. Check the IDFPR Division of Real EstateDre.html Idfpr.illinois.gov for updates as the cycle progresses.

Licensed Between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2025

Brokers in this group were required to complete the 45-hour Post-License Education by April 30, 2026. This is a first-renewal requirement that applies to newly licensed brokers in place of the standard 12-hour CE package.

Completing post-licensing has practical implications beyond just satisfying IDFPR. Until the requirement is met, your designated managing broker must oversee several key aspects of your practice, including handling earnest money, leading contract negotiations, and approving your advertising. Finishing it gives you more independence in your day-to-day work.

If you haven't completed your post-licensing hours yet, you'll need to look into reinstatement options through IDFPR. If you're current, your next renewal falls in the 2028 cycle.

Licensed On or After November 1, 2025

Your first renewal deadline is April 30, 2028. Before that date, you'll need to complete the 45-hour Post-License Education. You don't have any CE obligations for the current cycle.

How Illinois CE Is Structured

For brokers on the standard 12-hour cycle, CE breaks down into two parts: a Core Course covering state-mandated topics, and elective hours you can choose from an IDFPR-approved course list. The Core Course is not interchangeable with electives — both components are required, and the Core must be completed through an approved provider.

A note for REALTORS: completing your CE through an approved provider typically satisfies NAR's triennial Code of Ethics requirement at the same time, so you won't need to complete a separate course for that.

What Changed for the 2026 Cycle

The 2026 cycle introduced two notable changes from prior requirements. The Core Course expanded from 4 hours to 6 hours, with the added time dedicated to Fair Housing content. Elective hours were reduced from 8 to 6, but the Sexual Harassment Prevention Training requirement remained in place. The net result is the same 12-hour total, with more structured content on two topics the IDFPR considers priorities.
