A career in real estate can be incredibly rewarding. If the opportunity to create a flexible schedule, grow your career on your own schedule, and help people find the perfect property sounds appealing, then real estate might be the right job for you. But how do you ensure your success? Consider becoming a member of the National Association of REALTORs (NAR). The organization is dedicated to helping agents and brokers grow their professional skills and become more profitable. In the following sections, we'll cover the requirements to become a real estate agent in Arizona, then show you how getting certified as a Realtor by the National Association of Realtors Arizona can help you on your path to success.

Step 1: Become a Licensed Real Estate Agent or Broker

To become a licensed Realtor in Arizona, the first step is to meet the requirements to be a real estate agent or broker in the state. According to the State of Arizona's Department of Real Estate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Complete 90 hours of classroom or online education at an approved real estate school.
  • Pass an ADRE-approved real estate exam.
  • Get a fingerprint clearance card issued from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
  • Complete a Disciplinary Actions Disclosure form (LI-214 or 244) related passed convictions.
  • Complete a Disclosure Document (LI-400), related to criminal convictions, civil judgments, and other disciplinary actions.
  • Complete a contract writing course.
  • Complete an application.
  • Pay the required fees for the exam and license.

Note that some steps, such as fingerprint clearance, may take as long as eight weeks. Be sure to complete these steps before taking your exam and applying for a license.

What if I Have a Real Estate License in Another State?

If you are licensed as a real estate agent in another state, you must provide previous license and testing documentation. The Department of Real Estate offers additional information. Note that the requirements can vary by state.

Step 2: Become a Member of a Local Realtors' Association

After completing the required education and becoming certified to practice real estate, you will need to find a local association of Realtors in your area. There are more than 25 associations in Arizona, split by location.

Your real estate firm's principals must join your local association first before agents and real estate agents can join. If you are a sole proprietor or the major shareholder of your company, you may join yourself.

The steps to join may vary by association, but generally include applying and paying membership fees.

Step 3: Choose Courses to Become NAR-Certified

A NAR membership is valuable due to the networking — and the broad range of training and certifications the association offers. After joining, you may take training to become certified as a buyer's representative, land consultant, property specialist, property manager, and more.

What Is the Difference Between an Arizona Real Estate Agent and A Realtor?

A real estate agent is a person certified in Arizona to help people or companies buy and sell properties. A Realtor is a real estate agent (or broker) who has joined their local chapter of the National Association of Realtors and gained access to a wide range of resources, including training and networking.
