The Steps and Time Needed to Become a Real Estate Agent in Florida

How long does it take to become a Florida real estate agent? If you're ready to find answers to this question and start helping people find the home of their dreams, you've come to the right place. Below, we'll go over the six steps to getting your Florida real estate license and how long each step will take you. Overall, we estimate it will take about two months of hard work to fulfill your Florida real estate agent dreams.

Step 1 — Find and Complete a Florida Real Estate License Course

Time to complete: 2 to 3 weeks

Florida requires you to take 63 hours of pre-licensing education to help you learn the ins and outs of real estate. We recommend taking a Florida real estate course online so you can conveniently work through the 63 hours at your own pace.

While some may take a few weeks to complete this portion, the timing is up to you. Theoretically, you could complete your course in as little as... 63 hours! While this approach is fast, it won't give you much time to actually absorb the information, so we don't recommend it. Killing yourself on the study portion may equate to a poor final exam score, meaning you'll have to retake the exam.

Step 2 — Take the Florida Real Estate Agent Exam

Time to complete: 15 to 35 days

Pre-testing requirements

Now for the longest part of becoming a Florida real estate agent — waiting for your background check and application to be processed. Florida requires that all prospective agents undergo fingerprinting and a background check. This helpful PDF shows you where and how to get your fingerprints and background check done. It generally takes about five days for this process.

After the background check, you'll also need to submit an application to the state of Florida before scheduling your exam. They generally process these applications in 10 to 30 days.

Scheduling the exam

After your application is approved, the testing company will reach out to you with instructions for scheduling your exam.

Taking the exam

Taking the state exam itself is relatively painless as long as you've taken a great Florida real estate course and studied hard. Pearson VUE, the company that oversees and manages the state testing, offers the exam in a variety of formats and locations.

The Florida real estate agent exam costs $83.75 and requires a score of 75% or higher to pass

Step 3 — Activate and Affiliate

Time to complete: 1 to 7 days

You're almost ready to begin helping people buy and sell their homes in the great Sunshine State! You'll need to affiliate with a broker and have them sign the Florida real estate agent license activation form, which you will then send to the Florida real estate division.

While this process is relatively painless and could be completed in a matter of hours, we encourage you to closely evaluate and shop around. You want to make sure you get a broker that has your best interests in mind and can help you become the real estate agent rockstar you are meant to be!

Step 4 — Join Associations/Boards

Time to complete: 1 to 7 days

Depending on your needs, and the requirements set by your broker, joining a Realtor association or board may be optional. However, having an ongoing support group and source for continuing education is imperative to the success of a budding real estate agent.

We encourage you to shop around and consider the variety of different Realtor associations you could join, and carefully evaluate the different events they hold, the support they offer, and how it will ensure your success as an agent.
