How long have you been in the industry and how did you first get started in real estate?

I started in the real estate industry when I was 19 years of age. I posted an ad on Craigslist, and the company I work for now called me and I've been working for them ever since. That was nearly nine years ago.

What's the most interesting or most important thing you've learned in a real estate continuing education course?

Just a year or so ago, I took a class on emotional support animals. I didn't know that a miniature horse qualified as one, but apparently they do in the state of Texas.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment during your time in real estate?

My greatest accomplishment is getting my broker license. It's much harder to achieve now - more so than it used to be - but now that I have it, I will have it for life as long as I continue my CE. It was a ton of work, but I did it!

What is the trait you most admire in other real estate agents or brokers?

I admire drive. Real estate is rarely a salary industry unless you're up at the top. The ability to survive on a commission only based income is admirable.

What books, websites or courses do you recommend to those in the real estate industry and why?

I highly recommend subscribing to your local Realtor association newsletter. They often have tons of new information including but not limited to market trends, changes in the area, new homes and businesses. Also, keep current on contract law and contract changes. These change all the time and often classes are offered.

What advice do you have for new agents who are just starting out in the business?

Know your competition and market. Do not accept a listing that is outside of your expertise. The chances of you becoming a party to a lawsuit are greater if you put yourself in that situation. Also, you are the expert but DO NOT be afraid to ask questions. We're all here to help each other!
