Five Steps to Get Your Colorado Real Estate License

The Department of Regulatory Agencies' (DORA) website has full details on the education requirements.

  1. Take the 168-hour pre-licensing education course. Aceable Agent offers a great online real estate course that provides full support every step of the way.

  2. Take the Colorado Real Estate Broker License exam administered by PSI. There are two sections: the national portion consisting of 80 questions and the state portion made up of 74 questions. To pass, you must have a score of 75% or higher.

  3. Get a background check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. You'll also need to submit your fingerprints for a federal background check.

  4. Obtain an errors and omissions (E&O) insurance policy. This is essential before getting an active license.

  5. Complete your application using the Colorado Division of Real Estate's Online Services. You must register with eLicense to apply for the broker license.

In Colorado, there's no distinction between a Salesperson and a Broker license. A new real estate agent becomes an Associate Broker who can conduct all kinds of real estate business.

With a real estate license, you have a new career with unlimited potential for relatively low upfront costs.

How Long Does it Take to Get My Colorado Real Estate License?

Colorado gets a bad rap for being a tough state in which to get your real estate license. It's probably because a Colorado real estate license requires 168 hours of pre-education before you can take the exam. But for example, it's much worse in Texas, where you need 210 hours before taking the exam.

You'll need 42 hours a week and four full weeks to finish all 168 hours of the real estate pre-licensing education. By getting your real estate license online, you have the freedom to work around your other responsibilities. However, you'll also appreciate the freedom to study at your own pace. If you need more time on a specific section, you can go slower before moving on to the next subject.
