How long have you been in the industry and how did you first get started in real estate?

I have been in the real estate industry for a little over one year. Real estate has always piqued my interest, but it wasn't until my dad became a licensed real estate agent in Texas that I really decided to jump in. It's fun to work with my dad on a day-to-day basis and have a partner in the industry.

What's the most interesting or most important thing you've learned in a real estate continuing education course?

Some of the most important things I've learned in a real estate continuing education course were marketing techniques and different mathematical calculations. I come from a background in public relations but marketing in the real estate world is a completely different ball game, so it's great to see the different tips, tricks and techniques that experts recommend. As far as the mathematical calculations, it is super helpful to find different equations that I can use as shortcuts on a daily basis for residential, commercial or multi-family units.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment during your time in real estate?

What I would consider as my greatest accomplishment during my time in real estate would be my first million dollar listing. That's a BIG milestone for an agent, especially in their first year. It taught me a lot about the different in marketing a luxury home compared to other types of single family residences.

What is the trait you most admire in other real estate agents or brokers?

A trait that I most admire in other real estate agents and brokers is honesty and transparency. There is nothing more important than for me to trust another agent in the real estate process. When an agent or broker is transparent and honest when we may be running behind to get to the closing date or if they know their sellers/buyers may have an issue, it makes both of our jobs easier. Being upfront and honest, helps us keep our clients in the loop and gain their trust as well.

What books, websites or courses do you recommend to those in the real estate industry and why? (Please write at least two sentences.)

I highly recommend listening in to podcasts and audiobooks while you're on the road headed to listings. It's a way to kill time in a useful way. Podcasts I recommend include Face to Face Podcast with NAEA's Jay and Michael , The Honest Real Estate Agent , and Super Agents Live . For audiobooks, I'm currently loving Never Split the Difference and The Honest Real Estate Agent . The podcast/audiobooks give fantastic advice with realtime type situations that you can use daily. It's good listen in with these agents that are already successful and see what their journey was like and learn from their mistakes/mishaps.

What advice do you have for new agents who are just starting out in the business?

Don't give up! This is a HARD industry to crack. Market yourself because YOU are your brand. Ask to follow along with other agents/brokers and come with a list of questions to ask them. It's amazing how much you can learn from hands-on experience and relationship building with others agents/brokers can truly help you in the end. Get to know agents inside and outside your brokerage, because it's likely you'll all work together eventually.
